Metal roofing has become the most popular choice for residential roof installations across Sydney — and Colorbond steel in particular has earned that position for good reason. It's lightweight, durable, low-maintenance, fire-resistant, and engineered specifically for Australian conditions.
When installed correctly by an experienced metal roofing contractor, a Colorbond roof will protect your home for 40 to 50 years without the ongoing issues that eventually affect every tiled roof — cracked tiles, failed mortar, moss growth, and deteriorated sarking.
The difference between a well-installed Colorbond roof and a poorly-installed one isn't always obvious from the ground on day one. It becomes very obvious within five to ten years. The quality of the sarking, the batten specification, the fixing method used for the sheets, the way flashings are lapped and sealed, and the quality of the ridge capping — these details determine whether your metal roof performs as it should for decades or starts causing problems within a few years.
Sterling Roof Solutions installs, repairs, and re-roofs metal roofs across Sydney. Every installation is carried out by Gerard McCarthy — a tradesman with 15 years of roofing experience who uses genuine BlueScope Colorbond material and installs it to a standard he's prepared to put his name to. If you're considering a new metal roof, a tile-to-Colorbond conversion, or you have an existing metal roof that needs attention — call us for a free inspection and written quote.

Metal roofing costs in Sydney vary depending on the roof size, pitch, profile chosen, and the scope of work involved. The following gives a general guide — the only accurate price for your specific property is a written quote following a site inspection.
New Colorbond installation (new build or extension): Generally ranges from $80 to $120 per square metre of roof area, depending on pitch, profile, and complexity. A straightforward skillion addition of 40–60sqm typically starts from around $5,000 to $7,500 fully installed including flashings and guttering.
Tile-to-Colorbond full conversion — standard 3-bedroom Sydney home: Generally ranges from $15,000 to $25,000 including full tile removal and disposal, new sarking, new battens, Colorbond installation, ridge capping, flashings, and new guttering.
Metal roof repairs: Minor repairs — re-fixing lifted sheets, resealing failed laps, replacing damaged ridge capping — typically start from $400 to $1,200 depending on scope and access. More extensive repairs involving multiple failed sections or significant flashing work will be quoted individually following inspection.
Corrugated iron replacement: Priced on a case-by-case basis depending on roof area, pitch, and access. Contact us for a free assessment.

Sterling Roof Solutions installs and repairs metal roofing across Sydney's North Shore and surrounding areas. Sydney's North Shore has a significant number of homes from the mid-20th century that were originally built with corrugated iron or early Colorbond roofs — many of which are now at or beyond the end of their serviceable life. If your metal roof is starting to rust, leak, or show its age, it's worth getting an honest assessment of whether repair or full replacement is the right call.

A properly installed Colorbond roof typically lasts 40 to 50 years in Sydney conditions. The lifespan depends on the quality of the installation — particularly the sarking, batten specification, fixing method, and the way flashings are sealed — as well as the proximity of the property to the coast, which affects corrosion rates. BlueScope offers specific Colorbond products for coastal applications with enhanced corrosion resistance.
For most Sydney homeowners replacing an ageing roof, Colorbond is the more practical choice. It's lighter, lower maintenance, more versatile in terms of pitch requirements, and generally less expensive to install than a new tiled roof. Concrete and terracotta tiles offer better thermal mass and a more traditional appearance — which suits some home styles and personal preferences better. Gerard will give you an honest, unbiased comparison during a free consultation.
This is sometimes done, but we don't recommend it and don't offer it as a service. Installing Colorbond over existing tiles adds significant weight to the roof structure, prevents inspection and replacement of the sarking and battens beneath, and can trap moisture — leading to accelerated corrosion of both the tiles and the new metal roof. A proper tile-to-Colorbond conversion with full strip-off is the right approach.
Colorbond is available in 22 standard colours. Lighter colours — Surfmist, Shale Grey, Paperbark — absorb less heat and are a good choice for Sydney's climate if energy efficiency is a priority. Darker colours — Monument, Basalt, Ironstone — provide a contemporary aesthetic and are increasingly popular on modern Sydney homes. The ThermaTech coating technology on all Colorbond colours improves heat reflectance compared to standard painted steel. Gerard can show you colour samples during a consultation and advise on what suits your home's style.
Call us for an inspection. Leaks on metal roofs most commonly occur at lap joints, flashings, penetrations (chimneys, skylights, vent pipes), or at points where fixings have failed or corroded. These are often difficult to identify from ground level — our drone inspection capability is particularly useful for tracing metal roof leaks accurately. Don't apply roof sealant over a leak without understanding the cause — it's a temporary fix that typically fails within a year and can mask a worsening problem.
A full tile-to-Colorbond conversion on a standard three-bedroom Sydney home typically takes two to four days depending on roof size, complexity, and weather. A new Colorbond installation on an extension or addition can often be completed in one to two days. Metal roof repairs are generally completed within a day. Gerard will give you an accurate timeline as part of the quoting process.

From a leaking roof that appeared overnight to a full replacement that's been on your radar for years — if it's on your roof, we handle it.
