New Roof Installation in Sydney
Done Properly From Day Onet

A new roof is one of the most significant investments you'll make in your home. Installed correctly with quality materials, it will protect your home for 30 to 50 years and add genuine value to your property. Installed poorly — with the wrong materials, inadequate sarking, or shortcuts taken on flashings and ridge caps — you'll be dealing with leaks, cracked tiles, and ongoing repair costs within a few years.

This is why choosing the right roofing contractor for a new installation matters more than most homeowners realise. The price difference between a well-installed roof and a poorly-installed one is negligible at the time. The cost difference ten years later is anything but.

Gerard McCarthy has been installing roofs for 15 years. He started in Ireland, where weather conditions are demanding and standards are high, and brought those same standards to Sydney. When Sterling Roof Solutions installs a new roof, every element is done to a standard Gerard is comfortable putting his name to — from the sarking and battens through to the ridge caps, flashings, and guttering. No shortcuts, no subcontractors who don't know the job, no corners cut to save time.

We install new roofs across Sydney's North Shore, Ryde, the Northern Beaches, and Greater Sydney. If you're considering a new roof — whether it's a full replacement of an existing roof, a tile-to-Colorbond conversion, or a new installation on an extension or new build — call us for a free inspection and written quote.

What We Do

New Roof Materials
We Install Across Sydney

Choosing the right roofing material is one of the most important decisions in a new roof installation. The right choice depends on your home's structure, your aesthetic preferences, your budget, and the long-term performance you're expecting from the roof. Gerard will walk you through the options during your free consultation and give you an honest recommendation based on your specific situation — not based on what's easiest or most profitable for us.

Colorbond Steel Roofing

Colorbond steel is the most popular choice for new roof installations across Sydney — lightweight, durable, fire-resistant, and engineered specifically for Australian conditions. It's available in a wide range of colours that retain their appearance for decades, requires minimal maintenance, and typically lasts 40 to 50 years when properly installed. We use genuine BlueScope Colorbond on every job — not cheaper imported alternatives.

Terracotta Tile Roofing

Terracotta tiles are the premium end of the market — naturally fired clay tiles with exceptional longevity, outstanding thermal performance, and a distinctive appearance that suits many of Sydney's older North Shore homes. A well-maintained terracotta roof can last 80 to 100 years. Sterling Roof Solutions installs new terracotta tile roofs across Sydney and can source matching tiles for partial re-roofing work on heritage properties.

Concrete Tile Roofing

Concrete tiles remain a popular choice for Sydney homeowners who want to match the character of their property or the surrounding streetscape. They offer excellent thermal performance, good sound insulation, and a classic appearance that suits most Sydney homes. The key consideration is weight — a concrete tile roof is significantly heavier than Colorbond, so the roof structure needs to be assessed before installation. Properly installed concrete tiles last 30 to 40 years.

Tile to Colorbond Conversion

The full removal of an old tiled roof and replacement with Colorbond is one of the most common installations we carry out in Sydney. A tiled roof that is 30 or more years old will typically have deteriorated sarking, aged battens, cracked tiles, and failed ridge cap mortar throughout. Repairing these issues individually often costs more than a full replacement — and the result is still an old roof. A tile-to-Colorbond conversion gives you a new 40 to 50 year roof, eliminates ongoing repair costs, and reduces structural load on your home. We handle the full removal, disposal, and installation as a single service, including new guttering and downpipes.
How We Do It

How We Install a New Roof in Sydney

Free Site Inspection & Quote

Every new roof project starts with a free site visit. Gerard will inspect your existing roof, take measurements, discuss your material and colour preferences, and provide a written, itemised quote covering every aspect of the installation. No hidden costs, no surprises.

Roof Removal & Structural Assessment

We strip the existing roof completely — tiles, battens, and sarking — down to the bare rafters. The roof structure is then inspected for rafter damage, timber deterioration, or any structural issues that need addressing before the new roof goes on. If anything significant is found, we discuss it with you before proceeding.

Sarking & Battening

New sarking is installed across the entire roof, providing waterproofing, thermal insulation, and fire resistance. New treated timber battens are then fixed at the correct spacing for the chosen material — sized and spaced to Australian Standards, not cut short to save costs.

Roof Installation & Flashings

The new roof material is installed from the eaves up, with all flashings fitted at the same time — around chimneys, skylights, walls, and penetrations — using quality materials properly sealed and lapped to prevent water ingress.

Ridge Capping & Guttering

Ridge caps are bedded and pointed with flexible compound on tiled roofs, or finished with matching Colorbond capping on metal roofs. New guttering and downpipes are installed, sized correctly for the roof area, properly graded, and colour-matched to the roof.

Final Inspection & Clean-Up

Gerard carries out a thorough final inspection before leaving site — checking every ridge cap, flashing, valley, and gutter. All waste is removed, the property is left clean and tidy, and you receive full documentation of the completed installation including warranty details.
Pricing

How Much Does a
New Roof Cost in Sydney?

New roof installation costs in Sydney vary significantly depending on the size and complexity of the roof, the material chosen, whether guttering and fascias are included, and what's involved in removing and disposing of the existing roof. The following gives a general guide — the only accurate price for your specific property is a written quote following a site inspection.

Colorbond re-roof (tile to metal conversion) — standard 3-bedroom Sydney home: Generally ranges from $15,000 to $25,000 depending on roof size, pitch, and complexity. This includes full tile removal and disposal, new sarking, new battens, Colorbond installation, ridge capping, flashings, and new guttering.

New concrete tile roof — standard 3-bedroom Sydney home: Generally ranges from $18,000 to $30,000 depending on tile specification, roof size, pitch complexity, and whether structural work is required.

New terracotta tile roof: Terracotta is the premium option and is priced accordingly — typically $25,000 to $40,000+ for a full installation on a standard Sydney home, depending on the tile specification and roof complexity.

New build or extension roofing: Priced on a case-by-case basis depending on the scope of the new structure. Contact us for a quote.

These figures are indicative only. Sydney roofing prices vary based on access, roof pitch, number of penetrations (chimneys, skylights, vents), and local council requirements. Gerard will provide a detailed, written quote following a free site inspection.

What Our Sydney Customers Say

Don't take our word for it. Here's what homeowners across Sydney's North Shore and surrounding areas have to say about working with Sterling Roof Solutions.
Areas We Cover

Roof Replacement Services Across Sydney's North Shore & Beyond

Sterling Roof Solutions installs new roofs across Sydney's North Shore and surrounding areas. We regularly work in Chatswood, Lane Cove, Willoughby, Artarmon, Mosman, Neutral Bay, Lindfield, Gordon, St Ives, Hornsby, Ryde, Meadowbank, Epping, Eastwood, Manly, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Mona Vale, and across Greater Sydney.

Sydney's North Shore has a large proportion of homes built between the 1950s and 1980s — properties with original concrete or terracotta tile roofs that are now at or approaching the end of their serviceable life. If your home is in this bracket and you're starting to spend money on ongoing repairs, it's worth getting an honest assessment of whether a full replacement is the more cost-effective long-term option.

New Roofs FAQs - For Sydney Homeowners

Most new roof installations on a standard Sydney home take between two and five days depending on the size and complexity of the roof, the material being installed, and the weather. A straightforward tile-to-Colorbond conversion on a single-storey three-bedroom home can typically be completed in two to three days. A larger or more complex roof, or one with multiple chimneys, skylights, or irregular geometry, will take longer. Gerard will give you an accurate timeframe as part of the quoting process.

It depends on your home and your priorities. Colorbond is lighter, lower maintenance, and generally less expensive to install than concrete or terracotta tiles. It also comes in a wide range of colours and suits the majority of Sydney residential styles. Concrete tiles offer excellent thermal performance and a traditional appearance that suits some home styles better than metal. Terracotta is the premium option — exceptional longevity and appearance but at a higher cost. Gerard will discuss the pros and cons of each in the context of your specific property during a free consultation.

In most cases, no. New roof installations are carried out from the exterior of the home. Noise and dust can be an issue during strip-off, but the work is generally done without requiring you to vacate the property. If anything unexpected is found during the installation that affects the interior — significant sarking damage, rafter deterioration — we'll discuss the implications with you at the time.

For most Sydney homeowners with a concrete tile roof that's 30 or more years old, yes. At that age, the sarking will be non-functional, the battens are likely deteriorated, the ridge cap mortar will be cracked or failed across the entire roof, and individual tiles will be cracking regularly. Spending money on ongoing repairs is usually a false economy — the cumulative cost over five to ten years typically exceeds the cost of a full replacement. A tile-to-Colorbond conversion gives you a new 40 to 50 year roof, eliminates ongoing repair costs, and reduces the structural load on your home.

All new roof installations by Sterling Roof Solutions come with a workmanship warranty. Roofing materials — Colorbond, concrete tiles, terracotta — are covered by manufacturer warranties that Gerard will explain as part of the quotation. Contact us for specific warranty details relevant to your installation.

Yes. For full roof replacements and tile-to-Colorbond conversions, new guttering and downpipes are included as standard. Your existing guttering will be at the end of its life if the roof is, and it makes no sense to leave old guttering on a new roof. We install Colorbond guttering in a colour matched to your new roof.

For like-for-like roof replacements, council approval is generally not required in NSW. For significant changes to roof pitch, material, or form — particularly on heritage-listed properties — development consent may be required. Gerard will advise you on this during the consultation and can assist with the relevant documentation if required.
